Although composed for the lighter, more slight tones of period instruments, these quartets can transfer very successfully to modern instruments with a little care in tone and articulation. Some movements will transfer directly to the modern lever harp, and the others could, with a little careful editing, and pre-planning could be made to sit quite comfortably on that instrument. This publication benefits from a comprehensive Forward, including notes on ornamentation by Mike Parker.

From the CD notes:

For this recording I was not aiming to make a Harp CD, a Jazz CD, or even a Jazz Harp CD instead 1 Man Band is a snap shot of where I am at this point in my development as a musician - a showcase of what I'm enjoying doing at this moment in time.

The beauty of the Creative Industry is that everything is constantly under review and development, my music changing as I change and mature as a musician. For this project I've taken blends of some genres that I love (like Gypsy Jazz, Reggae, and Funk) utilised both electronic and acoustic music, and included a variety of different tones and timbres reflecting the live music I perform on a regular basis. I have also, for the first time in my life, prepared solo piano works for public performance, one of which is recorded on this CD. One aim of these recent developments is to create a variety in my performances that goes beyond that which is possible for me as a soloist on a single instrument.

Going forwards I have many ideas that require further experimentation and refinement. Continual development of my solo harp playing is of huge importance, as is the advancement of my work with electronics, both with the harp and with synths & keys. Following on from the solo piano work undertaken for this project I also want to develop my piano playing further, particularly in the more traditional jazz styles.

Perhaps the most important pointer for the future demonstrated on this recording is 'The Station'. While this track truly belongs to another project that is currently in the works I wanted to provide it as a preview. My great friend Matthew Williams and I have created a group called Chube – rather than being a regular band our aim is to be the nucleus of a group of like minded musicians writing, arranging, and recording tracks together. This group based work is something that I feel will give me more opportunities as a composer as well as a performer and we look forward to developing the project during 2017.Creighton's Collectionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14027538655621773532noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7432815959224612056.post-19691253601246728792016-11-09T08:42:00.001+00:002016-11-09T08:42:49.713+00:00On an overgrown path by Leoš Janáček Po zarostlém chodnícku
On an overgrown path
Leoš Janáček
arranged for Flute, Harp & Cello by Ernestine Stoop

Born in Moravia (Brno) the son of a school teacher, Leoš Janácek was a gifted child who showed musical ability from an early age.

The music he composed before 1900 gave no indication of the road he was about to take - leaving the path of the traditional, classic romantic structures he was using, he developed his own unique treatments of harmony and rhythm. Only Debussy had made a comparable move in composing. The opera ‘Jenufa’ (1904) was Janácek’s great break-through.

During this period of development the musicologist Jan Branberger asked him to submit a contribution for piano, violin or voice for inclusion in a budget edition of miniature compositions. It took Janácek about 10 years to finish the compositions which became the cycle ‘On an overgrown path’ (1900-1910). Originally intended for harmonium it was finally scored for piano.

Leoš Janácek wrote: “The little pieces ‘On an overgrown path’ contain distance reminiscences. Those reminiscences are so dear to me that I do not think they will ever vanish. Whenever I have a moment to indulge myself undisturbed in these recollections, then I find another such little piece comes to mind. It is on an overgrown path. There is a love song on the path, too, as well as the bitterness of disappointment.”

Ernestine Stoop arranged these 10 pieces for flute/alto-flute, violoncello and harp.

When asked to play a ‘Balkan’ programme, her decision to perform Leoš Janácek’s ‘On an overgrown path’ was not a difficult choice. The simple and honest beauty of each piece speaks for itself.

The choice of instruments was obvious: the flute and especially the hoarse sound of the alto-flute are perfect for most of the melodic parts, the violoncello is a beautiful instrument to colour the flute and take care of the harmonium part, the harp (like the piano) takes care of the harmony and rhythm most of the time. (the harp plays the beautiful chords-solo in the Frydek Madonna).
This edition is dedicated to Harrie Starreveld, flutist and Eduard van Regteren Altena, cellist. They have been the ideal musicians to help me improve the arrangement.
arr. for two harps by Ernestine Stoop

I was asked by a friend to play ‘La vallée des cloches’. When I saw the whole cycle ‘Miroirs’ I started to be fascinated by the music and wanting to play the music I thought it would be best to use two harps. Once I started I got so involved in the beautiful notes that I almost forgot to sleep. To take part in following the paths of such a genius has been a treat.

The five different compositions of the cycle have very figurative titles and Ravel placed these in different times of the day:

‘Noctuelles’ at midnight
‘Les oiseaux tristes’ during the siesta
‘Une barque sur l’océan’ in the twilight
‘Alborada del gracioso’ at sunrise
‘La vallée des cloches’ at noon

Both the Grand Duet (1865) and the Souvenir du Nord of 1854 (Adlais 164) are dedicated to a Welsh-born patroness. “Mrs. Lucy of Charlecote Park” was born Mary Elizabeth Williams at Bodelwyddan Castle, St. Asaph, and both she and her sister “Miggy” (later to become Lady Willoughby de Broke) were talented harpists.

In her book Mistress of Charlecote: The Memoirs of Mary Elizabeth Lucy, Alice Lady Fairfax-Lucy quotes a very amusing account of the Abergavenny Eisteddfod of 1853 which led to Mrs Lucy's first meeting with John Thomas at Llanover, and to her subsequent lessons with him at her home. “Mr. Thomas kept me to scales and exercises for the first year, and I did learn his way, and before I was very much older, I was able to play many a difficult duet with him. I would get up an hour earlier to have a good practice before breakfast, and I would go to sleep trying to hold my thumb up.” As her harp teacher, “Mr. Thomas” became a frequent guest and partner in duets on their Erard harps. As an enthusiastic patroness, Mrs Lucy attended his concerts over a period of some 35 years.

John Thomas composed duos, both for two harps and for harp and piano, throughout his life. For the most part, these compositions were operatic fantasias and duos based on familiar Welsh folk melodies. The Grand Duet is an exception, as whereas the others are concert arrangements, this one duet is an original composition.
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The song cycle, Dylan, is a chronological account of the life of the Welsh poet Dylan Thomas. Each song is preceded by a short spoken text, and these, together with the words used for the songs, date as closely as possible to the period and subject matter in question. Many of the striking elements of Dylan’s life are included: the controversy of his character, poverty, alcoholism, the tempestuous relationship with his wife Caitlin, America, and of course his remarkable ability to write and speak so astutely and evocatively.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Capel Celyn, a village near Bala in North Wales, was flooded in 1965 to create a reservoir for Liverpool. People were devastated as the water rushed into the valley, drowning the Chapel, Quaker Meeting House, the Post Office, and a number of cottages. There had been considerable protests, including the bombing of a transformer on the site of the dam structure, and in many respects the controversy had wider and longer-term consequences. Michael Stimpson wrote this work to mark the 50th anniversary of the flooding in 2015, as well as the 60th birthday of Sioned Williams.

"Our Angel is always there, and sometimes, if we need help, he uses someone’s lips to tell us something, but this answer comes in a casual way, generally at a moment when we don't let our worries darken the miracle of life."
Two of these carols, Pitter Patter and Christmas Bells, were written for the Key Stage One carol service at the primary school where I started my teaching career as a music specialist. The remaining four were written for the three young musical friends to whom the set of six is dedicated. The accompaniment is intentionally light. Young voices are not very strong and need plenty of melodic support. The piano part is playing the melody along with the children. The harp part is an instrumental descant which can be played for all or just some of the verses. Alyson Roberts
The pieces themselves were written by harpers who have been inspirational to us and the pieces vary in difficulty, as we are all at different stages in our harp playing. Our thanks must go to the people who have donated these pieces. This new edition has been re engraved but in a style to match the first edition.

Diadem, a fantasy on the Welsh hymn-tune, was written for the eminent Welsh harpist Elinor Bennett for premiere at the closing Gymanfa Ganu (hymn festival) of the 2014 North American Festival of Wales. The tune “Diadem” is most often sung in English to the words “All hail the power of Jesus's name”. The work breaks the tune into recognizable fragments, moving from rather free tempo to vigorous syncopations to a grand final presentation.

CD Notes

Pedals and Paws My main difficulty with composition has often been struggling to find a character or an inspiration for my pieces. I had experimented with the idea of a jazz suite, moving through many different sub-genres, for a while, but the character of the piece had eluded me. In August of 2014 the character presented itself to me in the form of the pitter patter of tiny paws – Charlie Parker, the miniature Schnauzer. The suite, Pedals and Paws, chronicles a typical day in the life of Charlie. We start off with a relaxed swing movement, as he gradually wakes up and decides to start his day. Then he goes on an exciting mid morning walk, this is a funky riff based movement with a Bossa Nova feel. After lunch Charlie loves to sit at the top of the stairs and watch the world go by, the third movement takes us on a jazz waltz, followed by a slow ballad as he succumbs to an evening snooze. However he nearly always gets his energy back late at night before bed, and so we finish with an uptempo Blues.

I would like to thank the following: Kristian Evans for the recording and mixing of the solo session, and Cardiff University for the use of their studio and equipment. Alex Hawkes for filming and editing the videos that have gone up on Youtube in the run up to this album. Meurig Hailstone for mastering the album. Matthew Williams for his brilliant playing, recording, and mixing of the duo tracks, and Cathays Community Centre for providing a venue and studio gear for recording those tracks. My partner Sara-Jane Waters for the fantastic photos on the CD, and also for her amazing love, support, and patience with me. Julian Martin for his tireless tuition, support, inspiration, and enthusiasm for the harp within the genre, without his input there is no way this would've happened. My parents, who are the main driving force for me – literally, they drive me everywhere, as well as dad's production of the graphics, design, and printing of the CD. Finally I do have to thank the mutt himself – Charlie Parker – for being a dog and providing the inspiration for Pedals & Paws. Not that he can actually read this of course...

We are delighted to announce the publication of the CONCERTO for PEDAL HARP by Savourna Stevenson which Creighton's Collection is printing and distributing on behalf of Savourna Stevenson.

Concerto for Pedal Harp by Savourna Stevenson - Celebrating 200 years of the modern pedal harp and dedicated to the composers and players who championed the pedal harp through the 19th and 20th centuries. Commissioned by Holywell Music and subsidised by Creative Scotland.

This work was first premiered by international soloist Catrin Finch and the Scottish Ensemble in the summer of 2012 to mark the bicentenary of the invention of Erard’s double action mechanism for the pedal harp. Savourna’s concerto was well-received by audiences at performances in both Edinburgh and Glasgow, the Herald’s Michael Tumelty describing it as:

“…direct music, from the heart and to the heart, absolutely open and totally honest in its integrity and expressive qualities…The concerto, full of whole-tone and pentatonic implications, and lovingly played by Finch with expressive delicacy and an alluring sense of elan, is actually a voluptuously Romantic piece, unashamedly gorgeous in its first movement, with more than a hint of tango, a wonderfully touching sense of yearning, perhaps melancholy, in its second, and a darker, striking flavour of Bernard Hermann in the harmonies and mood of its finale.”

The cadenza in the first movement of the concerto is likely to be particularly interesting to those wishing to study or teach the work at an institution such as the Royal Academy of Music and would be an ideal audition piece.

I wrote these tunes at various times over the past 6 or so years. I am really passionate about the clarsach, it is a beautiful instrument and one which deserves its own place and its own music. Throughout school being dyslexic, writing was a chore and I found solace with my clarsach; music gave me a voice when expressing myself with the written word was hard. Composition was a natural extension of my playing and most of these pieces are intended to tell a story or commemorate an event. Inspiration comes from many sources including nature, friends and family who have all been very patient over the years!

All of these tunes can be played as solos but for some of them I have written other parts — these can be downloaded from my website, www.elinorevansmusic.co.uk and can also be heard on my first CD Kaleidoscope.

It has been purposefully written for a wide range of players, from recent beginners through to advanced, so all participants will have an important part to play in creating the music. The piece is wholly inspired by Cromarty, mainly the connection with Sir Thomas Urquhart, Hugh Miller and the Emigration Stone. For harp ensemble with 4 or more harps.

Published retail price £10.00 + p&p view in our shop

Further information:

The Cromba Air (Cromba is the Gaelic word for Cromarty meaning crooked bay) is a beautiful and spacious tune and serves as an introduction and welcome to the whole suite.

That is followed by Mary’s 2 tunes, the first inspired by the works and writings of Sir Thomas Urquhart, first Laird of Cromarty and is called ‘Translating Rabelais’ The second tune is a slow air with the sorrowful title of ‘Remembering the Cromarty Firth from a London Jail’ which formed a part of Sir Thomas’ life story.

Then it is into Patsy’s tune inspired by Hugh Miller, and is simply called Hugh Miller with the subtitle ‘breaking open the stones on the Cromarty beach to expose the fossils inside’. The sound of chipping can be heard in this cheery slow reel. But it has a reminder that the very last stone that Hugh Miller cut in Cromarty was a gravestone for his young daughter.

Following that, Corrina’s tune is a dance in 3/4 and 3/8 called ’39 Ships Long Since Gone’ and is inspired initially by the Emigration Stone in Cromarty which has the name of all the ships that left Cromarty for the New World. The piece incorporates joy and sadness thinking about Cromarty Bay being the last place the emigrants would have seen before leaving for their new lives in Canada or Australia.

The whole suite is then finished off with the Cromba March echoing back to the first piece and one which all 3 musicians wrote together. It is uplifting and is a happy triumph over adversity and hardship kind of tune.

It’s a fitting end to the musical story of Cromarty.

The Cromarty Suite has now been published as a music book with all the parts for harp players and has been written for 4 ability levels of harp playing so that you can choose which one suits you best. Whether you're a recent beginner, an elementary student, an intermediate player or advanced player, you will enjoy learning this beautiful score.

The parts are written for harpists of the following abilities

Harp 1 - Advanced / Intermediate

On a visit to Morville, David Watkins was struck by the beauty of Morville and the surrounding area and after reading ‘The Morville Hours’ by Katherine Swift, his fascination with Morville grew. Katherine furthermore inspired David, not only with her insights into gardening and its history, but with her perceptive understanding of the Shropshire landscape and the origins of Morville with its Benedictine monastery. The Tower Captain, Ian Rowe, introduced David to the Morville bells during a weekly bell ringing practice. David became so further inspired by the extraordinary acoustics of the medieval Church and its magnificent set of bells that he began a work for harp ensemble juxtaposed with the bells.
